Michael Jackson's posthumous film-concert experience This Is It sent audiences racing to the box office handing over more than $100 million world-wide. That's the biggest international draw for a musical concert movie, though when counting only US ticket sales Jackson's release ended up playing second fiddle to Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana release last year.
US audiences only accounted for $21 million of This Is It's take over the weekend, adding on to the impressive $7 million the movie banked on its Wednesday opening. It took the number one spot handily, squashing out the more traditional Halloween fare, most of which floundered miserably.
Saw VI plummeted a painful 60% from last weekend, continuing its trend of being the least financially successful Saw flick to date. With only $22 million so far in domestic sales, it's still crushing its insignificant $11 million budget, begging the question of whether the apparent waning audience interest will even phase Lions Gate as it considers how long to draw out Jigsaw's already paper thin plotline.
The $15,000 miracle that is Paranormal Activity continued its climb towards the $100 million mark. Falling to second place this week it added another $16 million to its already staggering $84 million haul. Meanwhile Where The Wild Things Are slipped hard from third to sixth place, so far still $40 million shy of matching its $100 million budget.
Fox Searchlight cut Amelia a break and expanded the film's release to just over 1,000 screens. That was enough to push it into the top ten, though just barely. At number nine it still only earned $3 million which was 24% less than what it took in last weekend. With less than $10 million in the bank so far against its $40 million budget, it looks doomed to follow in the footsteps of its heroine by falling short of its goal.
