The news comes from Moviehole where a source spoke with the people involved in making it and was told that the problem is a conflict between MGM and Aronofsky. It seems MGM wants in on this whole 3D gimmick so they’re pushing to make Robocop in 3D. Aronofsky on the other hand, isn’t interested in gimmicks. Instead he’s interested in making compelling movies. He’s not a fan of digital bullshit and wants to do everything organically as he did in The Fountain. Say what you want about The Fountain, but it looked spectacular. And he did it without hiring a bunch of animators to sit around pushing buttons on computers.
So the Robocop remake is on hold and I have the feeling that if it ever comes off hold Aronfosky will be out and MGM will have hired someone willing to make the Avatar equivalent of Robocop. I’m envisioning an all CGI Robo, which will suck, since to get the best performance you really need a dude in a Robocop suit. Anyone else sick of 3D yet? Or am I still alone out here?
For now though, MGM is still in upheaval, dealing with cash flow problems. Don’t expect any Robocop, of any kind, any time soon.
